Name | Alias: Kitae Sohn
Journal:
protension
Age: 18
Canon: Original Character
Canon point: After half a year of being held prisoner by a vampire.
History: Kitae never knew his real father. The man that raised him and the man that provided half his genetic sequencing are two entirely different people. This is not a fact that Kitae's mother has ever voiced out loud to anyone but Kitae, and even though she only told him once in hushed secrecy when he was nine years old. Hoseong Sohn, the man who raised him, didn't miss the fact that Kitae didn't look a thing like him, and as Kitae aged and grew into his features Hoseong managed to put two and two together.
It was before Kitae even found out that Hoseong wasn't his real father that the drinking and verbal abuse started, and on occasions when Kitae mouthed off the abuse would turn physical.
Contempt breeds more contempt, and Kitae's home life quickly became toxic for everyone that lived in that household.
At school Kitae quickly created a reputation for himself a star student. Not only did he manage to keep on top of his schoolwork while working a series of part time jobs after school (to upkeep the appearance of coming from a wealthy family even though he did not), but he got top marks in all of his classes, and was polite and respectful to his teachers and peers.
... Most of his peers.
While the teachers saw Kitae as some kind of incredible golden child, most of his classmates knew Kitae could be vicious. He was a saccharin kind of polite to most of his classmates, even if he would occasionally make snide comments when they were out of hearing range, but one particular student, Insik Kang, got the brunt of Kitae's misplaced aggression. You see, Hoseong Sohn had a number of insults that he liked to hurl at the boy that wasn't his son, like worthless bastard, ungrateful shit, and a whole number of homophobic slurs.
These last ones dug at Kitae in particular, because there was a grain of truth there. Kitae liked boys, and while he wasn't exactly open about this fact he also wasn't denying this part of himself either, but he did hate it. His two close friends knew, and were supportive, but it wasn't enough to keep Kitae placated. In a better world Insik might have been the object of Kitae's much healthier affection, and a normal crush would have developed. With the way things were, however, Kitae became resentful of his attraction to Insik, and his bullying became relentless. Kitae isolated Insik from the rest of school, ensuring the boy was lonely and miserable, he insulted him every time he saw him, would beat him up after class, and forced him to do schoolwork Kitae decided he was too busy to do for himself. The worst of it came when Kitae pressured an unwilling Insik into fooling around with him in the school bathroom.
Shortly after this Insik Kang disappeared.
It wasn't unusual for Insik to miss school, even several days of school in a row when Kitae had been particular cruel to him that week, but after over a week of absence things began to look suspicious.
It turns out that in an attempt to hide from Kitae, Insik had managed to fall down a manhole, injure himself severely, but out of fear stayed silent as he slowly wasted away. Before Insik could pass away, however, he was discovered... by a vampire.
For whatever reason they had, this vampire decided to add Insik to their ranks, and after a short adjustment period Insik decided to use his newfound abilities to seek revenge. In the dead of night he grabbed Kitae at the end of one of his shifts, and ferried him off to an abandoned warehouse where he would spend the next several months paying back every humiliating act tenfold. Kitae was beaten, traumatized, and even glamoured into performing sexual acts that Insik video taped and forced Kitae to send off to friends and family. Insik stripped Kitae of his dignity and of literally everything Kitae owned, he broke his pride, and by keeping him squirreled away from the world he also kept Kitae constantly doubting that anyone was even looking for him. Kitae was reduced to a pathetic figure huddled on the floor, wrapped in a moth eaten blanket, and praying the daytime would last longer than it did.
Turns out when karma bites you, it bites you hard.
Personality: Kitae has always been a big ball of insecurities. From a very young age Kitae's (fake) dad made a point of insulting and belittling Kitae on the regular, and to absolutely no one's surprise at all it messed the kid up. While he fought hard to not believe the things said about him, it was almost impossible not to internalize some of it, especially when some of the things said about him were true. Kitae would talk himself up constantly to inflate his weak sense of self worth, and the smallest of things would bring it all crashing down around him. In other words, Kitae had a massive ego that bruised like a peach. Still, there were times when Kitae could manage to convince himself he really was as great as he constantly told himself he was.
After Insik his ego became a sad echo of what it used to be. While Kitae works hard to seem like he has a lot of confidence and self assurance, he honestly cannot stand himself. He'll still brag, and he'll sneer at other people's perceived weaknesses, but so much of it is just posturing. Kitae was always desperate to cover up his own weaknesses and insecurities from people, and those insecurities deepening has only made that desperation worse. The sad thing for Kitae is that he's so much worse at hiding things than he used to be too.
Kitae used to be fantastic at pretending to be sweet and likable for the masses, but he's given up on that entirely. What is the point in having people like you when you can't learn to like yourself? What's the point in having people like you when you also want to hold them all at arm's length as well? Kitae has a mountain of trust issues, and Insik's constant reassurances that Kitae's friends and family never cared about him really managed to worm their way into Kitae's head. Kitae's trust was always such a fragile thing to begin with, and now earning it is such a formidable challenge that it's really not worth it for most people, especially when Kitae cannot be bothered to spare a nice word for anyone around him.
And he really cannot manage to say anything nice to anyone. Kitae is rude and fast to insult people over the smallest of things. He's snippy when he's in his best moods, and outright brutal with his words when he's in his worst. While Kitae is not the type to pick a physical fight with someone, he will gladly pick a verbal one as long as things seem to be in his favor. The minute the other person starts to get genuinely aggressive towards him, however, Kitae will back down in an instant.
Kitae is not a brave guy. In fact, calling him a coward is probably putting it lightly. He's scared shitless of his own shadow at this point, and the smallest of things can make him jumpy and cagey. He's quick to lash out when he's startled, but even quicker to draw back into himself the minute a real threat arises. Kitae's main concern in life is his own self preservation, and he will gladly throw any and everyone under a bus to keep himself safe.
Fortunately, he usually doesn't have to. Kitae's overly cautious for the most part, and guards himself and his vulnerabilities with everything he's got. It's not hard to see past his act and realize the guy has some issues, but it'd be incredibly difficult to pry out of him what those specific issues are. He's not likely to trust a stranger with them, and he's not easy to trick into telling secrets about himself either.
For all his negatives, Kitae is a very bright boy. He earned his grades easily, but beyond that he is decent at reading people and situations. He's sharp, and when he's not panicking he can think on his feet relatively well. Kitae's incredibly observant, and has a pretty good memory, which lets him file away things he sees and hears for later. This is an especially handy skill to have considering Kitae is very good at putting pieces of puzzles together for himself, so he can understand the big picture much better.
The other thing about Kitae which isn't so bad is that he's loyal. He's doggedly loyal unless his trust is broken, and despite how hard it is to earn, once it's established it's not easy to break. At this point in his life Kitae has no one that he trusts, but at one point Kitae did have friends that he would lay his own life on the line for. While he's not a generous person by any stretch of the imagination, he can be incredibly giving to his friends. Mind you, that doesn't mean his words towards them are any less acerbic, but with Kitae actions have always spoken so much louder than words ever have.
Actions are what Kitae longs to see now too. Insik managed to convince him that his friends never really cared for him, because his friends never came for him. There were many reasons why, and none of them had to do with them not looking for Kitae, but the perceived lack of action to help him hurt him deeper than anything else could. Kitae may be rude, aggressive and mistrusting, but a deep part of Kitae longs to form a human connection. At his heart he's a scared kid who wants someone to be able to hold him close and promise him that things are going to be ok.
Abilities and Nerfs: N/A (no abilities)
Inventory: A worn, ratty blanket. That's it. That's literally all he owns.
Appearance: Kitae is willowy in build, relatively tall (5'11"/180cm) and rail thin. The pinky on his left hand is noticeably crooked from not being properly set after a nasty break. Here's a couple of pictures of his face.
Five Desires: - Trendy clothing (something he hasn't owned in a long time)
- BB Cream (and other light skin makeup)
- An especially comfortable/memory foam like mattress (6 months of sleeping on concrete floors coming to an end at last!)
- Silk sheets (to go with the comfortable mattress)
- A written contract guaranteeing he will never be sent back to his own world.
